The melodic bingo cards are a set of 12 two-sided cards measuring 11” x 16”. These versatile cards are used to learn lines and spaces, note direction, sing major and minor patterns in unison and in parts, and play bingo. Game Ideas include solfege and Curwen hand signs chart, photos and 4 entertaining games.

The cards: Each card is unique with carefully arranged patterns. The cards support moveable do, fixed do, numbers, and/or letters to teach melodic patterns. Each card contains graphics showing the Curwen hand signs and the tones of the scale in do re mi rainbow colors.

  • Side 1: The patterns use a G major 5-note scale, chosen since it contains no accidentals or ledger lines.
  • Side 2: The patterns use a G major 8-note scale and a 5-note E minor scale.

Teacher’s Guide: This guide shows all the patterns used on the cards and includes charts for Curwen hand signs.

Magic notes and magic wand: The magic notes are used to indicate note patterns, play bingo and as fermatas in Michigorian Chant. The magic wand makes clean-up fun.

Melodic Bingo Cards Game Ideas:
Teachers may use their own ideas with the cards, but these games are included for guidance and to spark the imagination:

Game 1: Mickey Ears (Side 1)
Young students place one magic note below two repeated notes, making the shape of a Mickey Mouse to learn to recognize repeated notes.

Game 2: Melodic Bingo Copy Game (Side 1 or Side 2)
This game takes its cue from the young Johann Sebastian Bach who studied music notation by copying music. As a pre-reading game, students happily copy patterns from the melodic bingo cards onto staff slates using magic notes. They experience sight-singing and learn left to right direction, lines and spaces, high and low, spacing of notes, repeated notes, and ascending and descending direction. Students who already read music enjoy this game equally well.

Game 3: Melodic Bingo (Side 1 or Side 2)
This game helps students to see patterns of notes as “melodic words” using a traditional bingo game where everyone wins. It can be played with individual students using one card, small groups using one card, small groups using several cards or a group of students using all the cards at once.

Game 4: Michigorian Chant (Side 1 or Side 2)
Sung simultaneously, the patterns create beautiful Gregorian chant-like melodies. This game can teach canons and be used in performances with voices and/or instruments.
