Let's Start With...

Before students begin to get a little bored starting with A (either at this session or later sessions) it's time to introduce the concept of beginning on a different letter. After a round of FINE! is finished with ABCDEFG order, ask them to wait a moment and not to mix up their cards after you've said them together. If you've played SNAKE! They will be able to answer if you ask them what letter comes after G. Together, take your A cards and move them to the top, after G.

"Let's say our cards together . . . B C D E F G A. Great. Now let's play FINE! again, only this time your B card will be the first card. Got it? Ok, mix up the others… Ready? GO!"
As soon as it's easy to begin with B, use another letter.

Find a new set

This version adds a new twist to keep them on their toes. It's also a good way to outsmart a student who is trying to be the first to finish first by attempting to keep the cards in order during the mixing step. Rather than say something obvious like "don't cheat," try this solution instead. It's also fun for everyone else who's playing fairly.

"This time we're going to begin with the C card. Mix up the other cards. Keep mixing. Okay, when I say 'GO', everyone stand up and move to a new set of cards, sit down and put your new set in order. Got it? Good . . . . . . GO!" This version is rather like musical chairs only no one ever gets left out. Remind them to be careful not to fall on each other as they scramble to find a new set of cards. Repeat this fun variation a few times.
